    This book includes my lecture notes for electrical machines course. The book is divided to different learning parts Part 1- Apply basic physical concepts to explain the operation and solve problems related to electrical machines. Part 2- Explain the principles underlying the performance of three-phase electrical machines. Construction of a Synchronous Machine, i.e. alternator or motor consists of two main parts, namely the stator and the rotor. The stator is the stationary part of the machine. It carries the armature winding in which the voltage is generated. The output of the machine is taken from the stator. The rotor is the rotating part of the machine.

      The round or cylindrical designs are used in machines operating on high speed, whereas the salient pole design is used in machines operating on slow or moderate speed. A typical example of slow-speed applications is a hydro power plant generator, whereas a steam turbine generator would represent an example of high-speed applications. Summary.
